Introduction:
The Chautauqua County Atlas of 1881 serves much like a census of property owners. There are over 27,000 names found within this atlas, some listed only as dots on a town map, some as head of a business, a few with a picture and a biography. One of the most important features of the 1881 Atlas was in inclusion of school district boundaries, each district area being given one of four basic colors. Most original copies of the atlas extant today show serious signs of wear and tear. Some of the school district colors have faded, the paper has turned rather yellow and has become quite brittle. After scanning the images, colors and the yellow of the pages were removed and new colors were added to the individual school districts. For reasons unknown, many original pages of text, pictures, and biographic material were unnumbered. As a consequence, the entire Atlas had to be repaginated in order to create a workable index. The index herein cannot be used when searching in an existing copy of the original Atlas. The user will find a short history of each of the 26 towns (Harmony was not divided until 1918). Pages 1 - 10 are devoted to an early history of the area and touch upon early explorers and their contact with the Iroquois Indians, the Holland Land Company purchase, the formation of the county, the involvement of the county in the War of 1812 and finally a brief account of the militia Chautauqua County contributed at the outbreak of the Civil War. Pages 42, 43, 44, 45 include maps of the world, the United States, New York State and Chautauqua County. If search is unsuccessful, try all spelling variations. If a page number is given in bold type, the person will be found on that map page. If a page number is given in regular type, the person will be found on a page of text. A page number in italic leads to an illustration. The sign # plus a page number in regular type immediately following a page number indicates the lot on which the person will be found. In all cases, the lot listed in the index is the lot on which the name begins. Surnames in parentheses are maiden names of married women. Numbers in parentheses indicate the number of times that name appears at that indexed location. Examples of Index coding: Briggs, F.O. 47 #3, 168. F. O. Briggs will be found on the map of page 47 on Lot 3. He will also be found on page 168 within text material. Davis, C. B. 61 #4, 63S(3) C. B. Davis will be found on the map of page 61 on Lot 4. He will also be found on page 63 on the inset map of Shumla in three places. Some creativity has been used when assigning the inset map significant, identifying alphabetical characters. Frost, George N. 14, 15 George N. Frost will be found among illustrations on page 14 (in fact, a picture of his home in Cherry Creek). He also appears within the printed material on page 15. Locating desired lot: Where geography allowed, the towns are about six miles square, divided into 64 lots somewhat equal in size and shape. These lots are consecutively numbered south to north, east to west. However, geography and politics have intervened in the size, shape and number of many lots in some towns. Some pages have more than one map and some maps have some lot numbers repeated.
